From Messolonghi to Nafplio

COUNTDOWN, 328 DAYS REMAINING

On May 20, 2027, the 1st Freedom Run will begin, following the historic route from Messolonghi to Nafplio in the footsteps of the fighters of the Exodus.

Preparations had already been completed last April, when this year’s event was postponed due to force majeure.

A few days ago, we also completed a commemorative run along the first section of the route, from Messolonghi to Glyfa beach, opposite the Trizonia islands. This section is 195 km long, reaches a maximum altitude of 1,529 m, and has a total elevation gain of 6,283 m.

This run served as the first real test of the route planning, the quality of the asphalt and dirt roads, safety at the more demanding points, the presence and readiness of volunteers, the organization of rest points and stations, and the guidance and support provided to the athlete who completed the route.

Giorgos Pantazis, himself a descendant of fighters of 1821, ran in honor of the memory of the Exodus fighters and helped us confirm that the preparations had been properly completed.

The test showed that there were no problems. It also confirmed that the residents of the areas we passed through welcomed us with enthusiasm.

In the coming days, the official announcement for the 1st Freedom Run will be released. The event will include 5 routes:

  • The main route from Messolonghi to Nafplio, with a total length of 439.2 km.
  • The route from Messolonghi to Platanos, Nafpaktia, with a length of 80 km.
  • The route from Messolonghi to Koutsochori, with a length of 20 km.
  • Two additional routes, approximately 8 km and 1 km long, intended for junior high and high school students, and for primary school students respectively. These will be confirmed in consultation with the Director of Sports of Aetolia and Acarnania.

Over the next few weeks, we will complete our meetings with the Regional Authorities of Western Greece, Central Greece, and the Peloponnese, as well as with the 11 Municipalities crossed by the route, in order to confirm their moral and material support.

We expect that clubs, volunteers, and local communities will continue to support us with the same enthusiasm they have shown this year.

More information is available at runtofreedom.org.

We will keep you informed.

We look forward to your participation.
